Does God feel distant?
It doesn’t have to be that way.
Why worship?
Spiritual growth is about our relationship with God. We are personally transformed by a more and more intimate connection to him. But our relationship with God is unlike any other relationship. Even though Jesus urged us to called God “father,” our relationship with him is different in important way than our relationships with other people.
Worship is a way of reminding ourselves that he is the Creator and we are the created. When we worship, we do two things:
Praise God simply because he is God and is worthy of our praise.
Communicate our gratitude that God loved us enough to send his one and only Son to save us.
There’s a story in the gospel of John about how John the Baptist—whose mission was to announce Jesus’ coming—was beginning to lose followers. They were leaving him so they could follow Jesus. When he was questioned about this, he replied:
“He must become greater; I must become less.”
John 3:30
In essence, when we worship, we adopt a similar posture. We acknowledge that we are small, and God is great. We declare that our agenda is subordinate to his.
